Cat fleas: how they look in the photo and how to deal with them

If the cat was overpowered by fleas

In most cases, fleas in cats belong to one of the most common types of fleas in general - the cat flea or Latin Ctenocephalides felis. This type of insect actively parasitizes not only on cats, but also on other animals - dogs, rats, rabbits - and just as easily and freely eats, if it is convenient, human blood.

At the same time, other types of fleas can be found on cats - canine, rat, human, rabbit. However, for the average owner of a mustache pet, all these fleas are the same for a cat - the difference between the species can only be seen under a microscope. But these bloodsuckers differ quite strongly from other parasitic insects, therefore there should be no doubt that the cat is being bothered by fleas.

It looks like a cat flea at increasing

It is interesting

In choosing a host, fleas are generally unpretentious. One species can parasitize on dozens or even hundreds of different types of animals. The main thing is to keep the blood warm. Of the more than 2,000 species of these parasites, only about 30 of these exist, which are very tied to one type of host and cannot exchange it even for fairly close relatives. As a rule, these species are parasitic in bats and are highly specialized in habitats and breeding grounds.

Fleas in cats: appearance and photo

Externally, fleas in cats resemble very small, smooth and shiny grains of plants. If it were not for their mobility, many cat owners would not even suspect insects at such points.

The body of a flea is smooth and shiny.

In the photo below you can see several parasites on the skin of an animal in the middle of wool: even with a slight increase, it’s difficult to see the legs and head:

Fleas drink blood

Regular flea in a cat, regardless of the species, has a body length of about 2-3 mm. Different types of fleas differ from each other in the structure of the head and the number of setae on the legs.

It is possible to examine in detail how fleas look like in cats, one can only take an insect in one's hands or put it under a microscope. In the photo you can examine in detail what a flea looks like in a cat, and study the characteristic features of the body structure of this parasite:

Photo of a cat flea under the microscope

  • lack of wings - it is precisely because of this that the insect is very difficult to catch, hold between the fingers and crush
  • elongated and flattened laterally little body, providing ease of movement between the hair of the host animal
  • very long hind legs, allowing you to make giant for the size of the insect itself jumping
  • the color of the integuments: all fleas found on cats are dark brown or black.

It is the jumping ability of fleas that became the talk of the town. An insect can jump more than 150 times its body. If a person had such abilities, he could jump a distance of up to 300 meters.

Jumping on their own are good signs for identifying fleas. If the tiny creature found on the body of an animal simply disappears from the place where it was just that - this is definitely a flea. The human eye is not able to see the insect leap itself: we can only detect the parasite within a radius of 20-30 centimeters from the last place of its location.

A flea in a cat is well distinguished from other possible parasites by the following symptoms:

  • small size - ordinary ticks are several times larger
  • dark coloration and mobility - fleas and lice in cats are almost the same, but the louse has a light colored body and is extremely inactive. Dodging distinguishes fleas and from lashing.

On a note

An additional difference between fleas and lice will be the placement of parasites on the wool itself: fleas move along the skin without climbing hairs, and lice, on the contrary, sit mostly on the hairs of the animal.

Cat Flea Biology

All fleas in domestic cats have a generally similar biology. All of them are obligate parasites that can feed only on the blood of their hosts.

Adult fleas feed exclusively on blood.

Flea excrement contains undigested blood

Breeding fleas it happens with a complete transformation: the female lays a portion of eggs, from which, after a few days, wormlike, non-adult larvae hatch out. They feed on either organic decaying remains or the blood of adult insects remaining in the excreta.

It is interesting:

The word “lay” does not quite correctly describe the way a flea spread eggs. Rather, it shoots them: eggs scatter from the body of the insect in different directions at high speed. This ensures that no eggs spread over a sufficient area.removal of one larva from another and reduction of competition between them for food resources.

And so the larvae of cat fleas look

The fleas of the domestic cat are constantly present on her body. They jump on the animal in order to feed, and leave it, being full. Larvae develop in the litter of the animal's nest or simply in piles of garbage. It is impossible to find larvae on the cat itself.

The options from which fleas come from cats are many:

  1. Infection from street animals.
  2. The attack of parasites living in places of rest or walking an animal: the cat can simply lie down near the mouse hole, from which insects will jump onto it.
  3. The presence of parasites in the house. As a rule, in this case, the parasites bite and people.
  4. Accidental drift into the house of insects by a person - on clothes or with household items.

Already these reasons are enough to understand that not a single animal, not even completely domesticated, is immune from infestation by parasites.

Feedback

“My Sonya never went outside on the street. Once two years ago she was brought down at home with a cat. I was shocked when I saw fleas on it. From where cat fleasif she does not communicate with other animals? A veterinarian arrived, looked, and said that we have all the loggias in fleas. I could not believe: it is unheated. But nevertheless, the doctor himself began to sweep the corners out of the corners and showed us the larvae of these filth. ”

Julia, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Fleas as carriers of dangerous diseases of cats

The most dangerous thing in flea biology is their connection with other parasites and pathogens of various diseases.

Fleas are carriers of helminths and dangerous infections.

So, fleas and worms in cats always exist side by side: the eggs of worms are transferred by jumping parasites on their paws. And in the body of the tiny parasite pathogens move from one host to another:

  • the plague
  • brucellosis
  • typhus
  • rickettsiosis
  • anthrax
  • tularemia
  • salmonellosis
  • encephalitis

... and about 200 different diseases, among which are deadly for both the cats themselves and for the people who keep them. Therefore, the state of the pet should always be carefully monitored, and at the first signs of the presence of parasites in it, begin to fight with them.

Signs that there are fleas on the pet

Finding out if a cat has a flea is easy. Even with a small number of them on the body of animals, they already cause unequivocal symptoms:

  • itching - the cat starts to worry and itches constantly
  • skin rash between hairs as red dots
  • dermatitis on the ground is especially strong bites. This symptom develops quite rarely and with prolonged parasitism of insects
  • severe anemia
  • insect excrement in the form of tiny black dots between hairs
  • and finally, the fleas themselves, elusive, but constantly seen visually in the wool.

If the cat often itches, it can be a sign of a flea.

Usually, the mere itching and constant anxiety of the animal makes it clear that the cat has fleas. A veterinarian can uniquely identify a flea in a cat after examining a pet.

On a note:

An indirect way to find out that a cat has a flea is to identify helminth infections. Among the feline worms, there are those whose eggs are carried only by fleas, and therefore the identification of these parasites clearly indicates pulyosis in the animal.

Immediately after identifying the fleas in the cat, it is necessary to start fighting with small bloodsuckers.

Flea Control

If a domestic cat has fleas, you must first choose the right means for their breeding and treat them to the animal. And after it should be cleaned of parasites room.

Today, there are many effective anti-flea drugs. All of them can be divided into several basic types:

  • flea collars are most effective in preventing cat infection. It is convenient to wear such a collar on a cat that only occasionally goes outside for a while. In this case, the tool will effectively scare off the parasites. The disadvantages of collars are that they can cause irritation to the neck of the animal. The most famous collars Hartz, Beaphar, Bolfo. Flea collar for cats Hartz
  • Insecticide drops on the withers are an effective remedy for both killing and scaring fleas. Very easy to apply - they just need to be rubbed into the skin of the animal to protect it from parasites for several weeks - but can be toxic. Very effective drops Advantiks, Stronghold, Hartz.Drops of fleas on the withers for cats Stronghold
  • Flea shampoos - the best tool for cats. They have a very mild action, non-toxic, effectively destroy parasites already present on the coat. Fleas in a pregnant cat are almost always excreted with shampoo. Quite popular shampoos celandine, Phytoelite, Lugovoy. Flea Shampoo Celandine
  • Flea sprays are the most radical and fairly toxic products. They are used when the fleas on the animal are too much and need to be etched quickly and immediately. They require very strict adherence to instructions and have many contraindications. For example, fleas in a nursing cat or kitten should not be eliminated by any of these agents. Frontline flea spray
  • Mechanical methods for removing fleas: combing and catching fleas manually. Very time consuming and time consuming method. But, for example, in kittens under the age of one month only with its help one can get rid of parasites.

Mechanically fighting fleas is time consuming and often ineffective.

Generally, if a cat first has fleas, it can be difficult to choose a remedy, because it is not always possible to predict whether it will cause allergies or not. It is not desirable to act by trial and error, but it is better to consult with a veterinarian immediately.

How to deal with fleas in cats

It is important to understand that if a cat has fleas, it will not be limited to breeding it alone. The fight against these parasites involves a whole sequence of actions:

  1. You need to choose the right tool, focusing primarily on the safety of his pet.
  2. The tool itself must be applied in full accordance with the instructions.
  3. After that, it is necessary to carry out activities for the removal of insects from the premises. For this, special aerosol insecticides are usually used.
  4. Provide prevention of infection with fleas and the pet and the entire premises in which it lives: lay out wormwood branches in the room or use insecticidal dusts, put a collar on the animal, and keep the house clean.

In any case, when detecting fleas in cats, it is necessary either to change or thoroughly wash its bed, toilet and bedding. It is in these places that parasites are likely to reproduce, and they will also become a place of secondary infection after the insects are destroyed only on the animal.

Today I found some white little insects on my cat's cat. They spread all over my pillow! Pillowcase in bleach, a cat in its place, but I can not sleep! I feel bad, everything seems to be creeping for me. The whole Internet turned upside down, but did not find such. They are like bugs, do not jump, but just crawl. So many of them! The cat is calm, does not itch even.

I tried different medicines to ize fleas on two cats, I stopped at the local leopard drops. They are not expensive and the action lasts for several months. Shampoos and collars do not give such an effect, they are more like additional protection. With spray, we did not become friends, unfortunately, he is very problematic in the application.

Varya, what are you writing in Bars permethrin, it is very poisonous and many cats are poisoned by them with a fatal outcome.
The same applies to most domestic-made shampoos, sprays and powders - permethrin in the composition. In foreign drugs have long abandoned it.
I recommend Advantage drops - without restrictions.

Here you advertise the company Hartz, but in the USA a site was created against the products of this company, to victims, that is, animals that died or suffered from the use of collars or drops of this company. I advise you to be careful and do not risk your pets.

We somehow also could not get rid of fleas, then eventually spread a whole bottle of shampoo from fleas and wet the entire floor. Palaces had to remove everything. Two hours later I came home and washed with clean water. And, lo and behold, fleas are gone. And so they suffered for about a month, they gnawed all my legs, it was summer, they also flogged wormwood, there was no sense from it at all.

They took a cat (kitten), she had fleas, we brought out shampoo and it itch anyway. I did not think that there would be such problems with a cat, I had wanted a cat for a long time, but now it would be better if we didn’t take it. But we love her very much and therefore no one can throw her away ... She climbs to bed every night, always shakes her off, and now I understand that I’m doing the right thing. She sleeps with her brother or with her mother. We had a cat in a private house (now we are in the apartment). So he always walked, he left every night, and there was nothing - there were no fleas. And no one bit us.

And now with her skin really began to itch. And so many problems. When they took it, they did not bathe for a long time, for a very long time and now I understand what the mistake was. I do not know what to do, how to get them out of the apartment. Tell me! When fleas were brought to her, they jumped around, and now they have probably spread. I do not know what to do. And I was not so afraid when I thought that they did not bite a man! And now I learned that they can still bite a person, now I can’t walk around the apartment normally. Tell me, can they live like head lice (human) in their head and bite like that?

The ankles were all in bites, they bought a collar for the cat, a week ago they washed all the bedding and went over the mattresses. And reappeared, but fewer bites. And thank God, there are no larvae ... What to do?

I felt sorry for them, took them home, feed them and distribute them later. But after a couple of days, I found them with fleas, washed everyone, and I still have my six-month-old cat, I'm afraid he will pick up. What to do, tell me? Will they stay at home? Hello, we also took a flea-haired kitten, but they cannot be processed by anything until they weigh 1 kg. I had to comb it out. I took a comb from fleas, put the kitten on my knees and combed it out for three hours. Today I discovered again fleas on an already grown up cat, a colleague advised me to comb a comb, moistened with a solution of balsamic vinegar. Two liters of one cap of balsamic vinegar and scratching. Good luck and patience to you!

From my own experience, let me give advice to all those who are confused by the appearance of fleas in animals and in the house. Wash the animal with flea shampoo, etc., then dilute this shampoo, not necessarily the whole bottle, in a bucket of water. Wipe carpets, floors, baseboards and around them with this solution - especially, and you will be pleased with the result.Shampoo should be, of course, good. If it helps the animal, then everything in the house will be fine. Then put a flea collar on the animal. Fleas can be easily picked up in the grass, so the collar will help you and your pet!

As for the procedure with the animal - it is better to repeat the wash after a week. It will not be superfluous.

THE MAIN THING! Do not forget to protect small children after processing the floor, carpets and others. After all, they crawl and always pull their fingers and toys into their mouths. All good and love! )

Tell me, are the eggs, larvae and pupae transported themselves? That is, is it possible to bring it home in clothes, for example, if you accidentally stick? I spent the night in the house of a man who has a cat, and fell asleep on the couch, on which she often jumps. Could I, asleep drunk, say, on a pillow, where there could be fleas or their eggs and larvae, bring it all home?

Could you tell me, please, yesterday I found an incomprehensible living muck of black color in my cat, very small, oblong, barely caught. Three weeks ago, the cat was in the hospital in the veterinary clinic after a serious operation. This stuff is not like a flea and louse. Small, long, and creeps like a worm, but very quickly. I saw at the withers, because her back was shaved, and she noticed.

Calm down, fleas are not scary. Buy in a pharmacy or animal hospital a drop from ticks and fleas, cost a lot, as much as 400 rubles. Drops like magic - dripped on the neck of a cat or a cat, a week later not a trace. Protection lasts 2 months, after the drops they fall dead from the cat. For humans, fleas are not dangerous if they are not human. With human fleas and larvae can be washed out with a special shampoo (Balsam). It also helps with dandruff, it only smells of cedar.
