And there is only one reason for such curiosity: the desire to find out all about the pests in order to find the most effective way to get rid of them.

But there are enthusiasts who purposely breed cockroaches in their home. Someone seriously keen cockroach, another feeds insects with domestic animals, and the third considers cockroaches themselves as their favorite pets.

In the vast diversity of the Sub-Order of Tarakans, each terrariumist can find the species of individuals to his liking. Indeed, today scientists already know more than 4.5 thousand species of cockroaches. And this is not the limit, as entomologists continue to discover new species.

 

Cockroaches on the territory of the former USSR

Cockroaches are great travelers.The habit of living with a person forces them to travel around the world with him. Therefore, there is nothing surprising when in Ukrainian or Russian buildings suddenly find shelter and species of cockroaches, more familiar, for example, for America or Turkey, multiply safely.

People used to consider cockroaches pests. But what unusual types of cockroaches are! There are experts who are ready to appreciate the beauty and grace of individuals from this order.

In the modern world it is fashionable to have exotic pets. Who are you surprised by the appearance of snakes, iguanas or poisonous spiders in comfortable apartments? In home terrariums, some types of cockroaches look elegant, cause genuine interest in a certain group of the population and are no longer a surprise.

Lucihormetica subcincta, the photo of which is given below - comes from South America, the dream of a true insect lover:

They came up with a tender nickname for him - “little car”. The creature looks original. A light strip goes around the whole black cockroach calf, short light elytra, and the males have bright yellow spots on the pronotum.The insect is very much like a tiny car with burning lights.

This handsome man is considered the sweetest of the representatives of the cockroach army. Contrasting black and white is a bit like the look of a predatory ground beetle, firing liquid with a strong odor at its offenders. This similarity serves as a kind of cockroach protection. In his homeland, in India, he has enemies, so during the day the insect hides under stones, tree roots, and at night it searches for food.

And the other cockroach, Blaberus craniifer, has a rather strange appearance and has an intriguing name - “Dead Head”:

Cockroaches - champions

There are among champions their champions. The largest is the Madagascar hissing cockroach, or Gromphadorrhina portentosa. This type of cockroaches is rightly called a giant, which is clearly demonstrated by the photo:

Yellow-brown individuals, capable of growing up to 10 cm, are striking not only by their impressive size, but also by their unexpected habits. Cockroaches of this species are capable of making a threatening hiss. In fact, there is nothing unusual in this sound. This is a kind of powerful exhalation.

At the moment of danger, the insect's abdomen contracts, sharply squeezing out air through the breathing holes. Such an expression of masculinity acts effectively on potential enemies, as well as on less successful rivals in mating games. Defending the right to the female and the territory, cockroaches arrange real fights, as a result of which someone may well end up without a paw or mustache.

This is an Australian digging rhinoceros cockroach, Macropanesthia rhinoceros. In size, he can yield to his African relative, but in the mass he has no equal. Some copies weighed 37 grams. This value is comparable to the weight of an average sparrow. Insect, as the name implies, is capable of bursting up to a meter long tunnels in the ground. This type of cockroach owns another record. Rhinos are long-lived among insects, they live up to 10 years.

BUT American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) has no equal in speed:

Scientists felt that in just one second this sprinter could cover a distance 50 times longer than his body. Of course, this achievement was not made for the sake of sporting success, but from the insect's greatest cowardice, only legs can save it from enemies.

 

Representatives of different types of cockroaches have wings, although almost no one knows how to use them. Weak attempts to fly, or rather plan, are extremely rare, in exceptional cases.

But in Latin America, Megaloblatta longipennis is a cockroach, which has full-fledged large wings:

Individuals from this species can rightly be called the only flying cockroaches. When the insect unfolds its wings, it becomes truly huge, reaching 20 cm wide.

 

Cockroach Evolution
