Pyrethrum to combat bed bugs

Статьи Article 5 has comments

Pyrethrum powder is a natural remedy for the destruction of bedbugs and other insects.

Just today there are no funds on the market for the destruction of bedbugs, and most of them contain powerful synthetic insecticides. However, what to do if there is a small child in the house or a pet everywhere poking its nose? After all, most insecticides are to some extent toxic for warm-blooded animals.

In these cases, you can try to use a natural remedy - feverfew powder from bugs (which is often simply called feverfew). About him we will continue to talk more ...

What is pyrethrum powder?

The insecticidal properties of pyrethrum, or chamomile, have been known to man for a long time. From the dried flowers of this perennial plant, the mistress prepared powder for future use, which successfully eliminated parasites such as bed bugs, fleas, cockroaches, and mosquitoes.

Dried and shredded pyrethrum flowers

Pyrethrins in the composition of pyrethrum powder block the transmission of nerve impulses in bedbugs, resulting in paralysis and rapid death of the insect. In addition, the unique properties of pyrethrum powder, also known as Persian or Dalmatian powder, made it possible to fight not only with bedbugs, but also with mites, and even with helminths.

Pyrethrum powder was once called the Dalmatian powder

It is interesting

To destroy the scabies mites in animals in large farms, a small pit was filled with water with diluted pyrethrum powder, after which they were driven into animals for bathing. The death of ticks, as a rule, occurred on the same or the next day.

Needless to say, making such a powder from bedbugs or other harmful insects was a very laborious process. Industrial analogs of pyrethrum, created in the 40s, required less time and labor and were more efficient, so the production of natural powder has since been almost discontinued.

Making pyrethrum powder is a complicated and time-consuming process.

Nevertheless, even today the main advantages of the feverfew powder are:

  • low toxicity to humans and other mammals with marked efficacy in the fight against bed bugs;
  • naturalness and environmental friendliness, high rate of decay in the light (valid for no more than 1.5 days). For the same reason, it is convenient to apply it in a house where there is a child or pet, without fear that the residues that are not completely removed from the surfaces of the sofa or carpet will cause poisoning and other troubles;
  • pyrethrins in the powder practically do not cause addiction in insects;
  • the range of use of the powder of feverfew is not limited to bedbugs, it can be successfully used to combat cockroaches, fleas, mosquitoes, perioeda in house birds, as well as pests of garden crops.

Abroad, pyrethrum powder and concentrate are used to combat bed bugs and pests of garden crops.

However, some advantages of the powder at the same time are its disadvantages. Thus, insecticides in its composition quickly disintegrate in the light, and therefore do not have a sufficiently long action to destroy all the larvae and adult bugs.

Unfortunately, the effect of pyrethrum is short and may not affect the eggs of bedbugs in secluded places.

Accordingly, it is advisable to use the powder with a small number of parasites. Another drawback of this tool is the fact that it is quite difficult to buy feverfew from bedbugs today in the free market.

It is interesting

A detailed study of the properties of pyrethrum was conducted in the laboratory as early as 1908.However, it was not until the 20s that the structure of the natural insecticides pyrethrins was reproduced, and their production began to improve. The drugs were very expensive and also very unstable. It was only in the 40s that it was possible to synthesize more persistent insecticides in large quantities — allethrin and tetramethrin — which were called pyrethroids. Today, many remedies for bedbugs, fleas, and ticks belong specifically to the pyrethroid group, they have sufficient effectiveness against these parasites with relative safety for warm-blooded creatures.

Where to find feverfew from bedbugs?

Anyone who wants to buy feverfews from bedbugs will find it difficult to do. You can try to look for it in pharmacies, however, pharmacists, having heard the name, will most likely offer instead a girl's feverfew capsule as a biological additive to strengthen the body.

If you have experience in ordering goods abroad, you can try to buy pyrethrum powder at Amazon, where it is sold as a dust with a special sprayer called pyrethrum dust.

On Amazon, pyrethrum can be found under the name pyrethrum dust

In Russia, feverfew from bedbugs in small packaging can be found in selected online stores.In some of them, delivery is possible both in Moscow and in the regions. In extreme cases, instead of pyrethrum powder, you can use pharmacy chamomile, which can be bought at any pharmacy in the form of dried flowers or in the form of filter bags with powder. True, pyrethrins in its inflorescences are much less contained than in Dalmatian chamomile, which means this remedy will not be so effective.

How to make such a powder at home?

In Russia, Dalmatian daisy and its relative Caucasian chamomile are quite popular garden plants. They are actively used in landscape design due to unpretentiousness to weather conditions and a pleasant appearance. If you look at the cottage to yourself or to your neighbors, then surely you can find there these flowers that adorn the flower beds.

Both Dalmatian and Caucasian chamomile contain natural insecticides.

Insecticidal substances called zerins and pyrethrins that affect bugs are in all parts of the plant, but most of them are in inflorescences. Clean them in the period of active flowering.

Most pyrethrins are found in chamomile flowers.

To carry out drying is better in the attic, that is, not under the open sun. Dried inflorescences should be stored in a dark, dry place.Grind into powder they can be as needed on a regular coffee grinder or in a blender.

To dry the inflorescences of pyrethrum you need to spread them in a thin layer in a dark place.

If, nevertheless, there is no possibility to grind the flowers into a powder, then an aqueous extract can be made from the crushed raw material. To do this, inflorescences poured into a container (for example, a bucket) to half the volume and pour water. In 24 hours, the filtered infusion can be used to treat the affected surfaces. Immediately before processing it is recommended to add a little soap or washing liquid to the infusion.

It is important to know

Despite the fact that pyrethrum is a completely natural remedy, pyrethrins themselves can be quite powerful allergens and cause contact dermatitis, lacrimation, and even an attack of bronchial asthma. However, such effects can occur after the use of almost any medicinal plants. The risk of allergic reactions to feverfew is increased in those who are already allergic to pollen, such as ragweed. For this reason, do not allow direct contact with this powder of very young children.

How to use feverfew from bedbugs?

To apply the powder in hard-to-reach places, a special sprayer or even a regular rubber pear is used, with which the feverfew can be blown into different slots. For processing the same mattress or floor under the carpet will be enough to distribute the powder in a thin layer over the surface.

As for the prepared infusion of feverfew - it can be sprayed using a conventional household spray.

The infusion of feverfew can be sprayed with a conventional spray.

The effect of the product in a lighted area lasts about 1-2 days, so after this period it is necessary to apply fresh powder. If the number of bedbugs is low, then daily processing for 5 days may be enough to get rid of parasites.

Nevertheless, it should be understood that with a high number of bugs in the room, not only pyrethrum powder, but often powerful industrial insecticides will not be able to quickly cope with the problem.
